French forward, Antoine Griezmann had a scoring masterclass dished out to Leganes as he scored all 4 goals in a demolition of the La Liga team. The former Sociedad man had not been at his best this term, though he offered a timely reminder of his ability at the Wanda Metropolitano.
The result sees the Rojiblancos cut Barcelona’s lead at the top of the table to just four points, and serve off a potential title decider at Camp Nou next week as both teams face off in Catalonia.
Griezmann netted twice in each half and thus became the first Atletico player to register back-to-back hat-tricks this century. He also became the first Atleti player to score four in a single game, following the footsteps of Colombian hotshot, Radamel Falcao who achieved the feat in 2012.
Speaking after the game, Diego Simeone said, “It is a great feeling, the team are on an upward curve,”. “We´re in good form, we need to focus on carrying on improving as aside. We´ve tried to be tighter than we were last time out. “Leganes has a couple of chances, but we improved and were able to seal the win.”.
Griezmann opened the scoring in the 25th minute after latching on to Koke’s sweet pass before doubling the advantage with a brilliant free-kick shortly after. He scored his hat-trick goal with a towering header before volleying home a fourth to register the club’s eighth consecutive victory across all competitions.
The 25-year-old had not been at his brilliant best this term but the last two matches have shown that he is still up there with the best in the world.
He has been linked to a summer move to Barcelona, who are ready to activate his £87m release clause though the club are reportedly looking at extending his contract.
